Welcome back to Medieval Monday! Our “First Kiss” theme continues, and this week, I’m excited to feature Ashley York’s Lachlann’s Legacy.

If you’re following my excerpt from Return of the Raven, you can find Snippet #7 on Ashley’s blog. Remember, you’ll find links to all the participating authors’ snippets at Medieval Romance Lovers on Facebook. (#MedMonSpring21)

Now, let’s enjoy Ashley’s seventh snippet:

“I’d not thought of it as such, but I’ll admit I find great comfort in the thought.”

“As ye should.”

His chest tightened with the truth of her words. Slowly, he nodded but words refused to come.

“He was yer sire, yer family, yer clan.” With her hand on top of his hands, she fisted his fingers around the precious metal. “Best to keep it safely tucked away.”

“Ye’re right.” He put the medallion back where it belonged. “My thanks for keeping it safe.”

More about Lachlann’s Legacy:

Hidden secrets could tear them apart as fast as their passion drove them together

On the Moray coast in Scotland…

Ethne’s genuine and caring nature makes her invaluable to her brother as his son’s caretaker, but he and his wife treat her as little more than their servant. When she learns their tribal leader would use her chaste status for his own purposes, Ethne plans to escape and reluctantly accepts the help of Lachlann—a handsome pilgrim she only just met at the local faire.

Despite her independent spirit, Ethne feels drawn to Lachlann. Her instincts say his intentions are honorable, but can she trust him with her heart?

Raised by his godfather with few clues to his family’s past, Lachlann values his freedom and the brotherhood of his highlander kin. Disguised as a pilgrim on a mission for the priory, he encounters Ethne, a warm, intelligent maiden whose courage in the face of a loveless marriage awakens an intense need to protect her.

Unfortunately, Ethne is one of the very people he must deceive to explore the cave system containing clues to the lost treasure he seeks. But he cannot abandon her to an uncertain fate—or deny the simmering tension between them.

With religious prejudice running high and both of them facing tests of loyalty, Lachlann and Ethne may realize the only way to fight for their futures is to surrender… to each other.

Now, let’s enjoy her eighth snippet:

“And I will not.”

Astrid wasn’t sure what to say to convince him that she was sincere in her desire to see to his needs. His chest rose and fell and she noticed his breathing getting faster. Looking from blue eye to green eye, she said, “Allow me to assist ye. I have wronged ye, and I know that. Believe me, I do. I ask ye to allow me to show ye the respect due every warrior. Respect I have been sorely lacking.”

Snap! See what happens next when I’m over at Cathy MacRae’s blog next week.

A little more about Eyes of the Seer:

He wishes to prove himself…

Marcán of Clonascra bears the bloodline of Brian Boru and his prowess as a warrior has earned him great respect from everyone but Astrid, the woman who holds his heart. Between her mother’s condemning him as a pagan Seer and Astrid’s total disinterest, he finds solace as the king’s protector and confidant.

She is desperate to escape…

Astrid is more than ready to wed but her brother, the king, is in no hurry to see her married, so she decides to see to her own match-making. The man she approaches quickly reveals his lack of honor, but her overbearing mother pushes her to wed him anyway. When Astrid discovers Marcán’s love for her, will it be too late to have the happiness she’d always dreamed of?

Ashley York, Daughter of the Overking, excerpt, Judith Sterling, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Night of the Owl, The Novels of Ravenwood, The Warrior Kings

Welcome back to Medieval Monday!  Our theme of “Celebrations” continues, and I’m delighted to feature Ashley York’s Daughter of the Overking, the third book in The Warrior Kings series.

If you’re following my excerpt from Night of the Owl, you can find the eighth snippet on Ashley’s blog: https://www.ashleyyorkauthor.com/blog

Now, let’s enjoy her eighth snippet:

“Ye believe she’ll resist ye?”

“D’ye see the way she is with her brothers? She may now dress like her mother, but she sees herself the same as a man. More importantly, she sees nothing of value in what a man can offer her. Just the opposite.”

“I see.” Tadhg rubbed his chin in a thoughtful manner. “So they fear she will continue to resist. And with the onlookers—” Tadhg raised a hand at Darragh’s gasped protest. “—not exactly onlookers.”

Darragh relaxed his shoulders.

A little more about Daughter of the Overking:

A mistaken identity. A gruesome murder.

Trained as a warrior…

Brighit of Clonascra despises the trappings and demands of womanhood and is far more comfortable training for battle. Long held alliances require she set aside selfish dreams and take Darragh as her husband. The union intended to promote peace between the clans is interrupted by the shocking murder of a neighboring king, and she quickly discovers there are far worse things than being wed.

Trained to be king…

Darragh of Drogheda has no wish to be king, but he is an obedient son and supports his father’s plans. His marriage to Brighit, however, will be no hardship at all since he finds her most intriguing when she fights him at every turn. A she-warrior indeed. Her persistent dismissal of him merely blows the fire aflame and sets him down the path to discovery of all her most tightly held secrets—secrets that could cost him his life.

Ashley York, award winning author, Curse of the Healer, excerpt, Judith Sterling, literary giveaway, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Shadow of the Swan, The Novels of Ravenwood

Welcome back to Medieval Monday! I’m excited to have award-winning author Ashley York here today. We’re featuring her medieval romance, Curse of the Healer.

If you’re following my excerpt from Shadow of the Swan, you can find the tenth snippet of Robert and Constance’s first encounter on Ashley’s blog. Remember to leave a comment there for a chance to win a signed print copy of the book! Here’s the link: https://www.ashleyyorkauthor.com/blog

Now, let’s enjoy Ashley’s tenth snippet:

“I do.” His voice, no more than a whisper.

A tentative caress to her breast and her nipples tightened, painfully. His open palm running across that sensitive area increased the heat beneath her skirt. She squirmed under his ministrations as he cupped one breast and then the other. Grasping and releasing. The tension bloomed into pleasure and she exhaled.

“A lovely night.” He moved back to her ear, his warm breath making her heart beat faster. “And we are of the same mind.”

She nodded, pressing her breasts against the eager hands that stroked her, blessedly soothing.

“I’ve a great need for ye, Aednat.” His husky whisper intensified her longing.

A hand caressing her backside urged her closer. She molded herself to him, allowing her breasts to be more fully grasped in his hands, the heat becoming nearly unbearable. His persistent mouth suckling at the crook of her neck sent waves of delight through her body, settling between her legs.

Follow along next week when she’s visiting Cathy MacRae’s blog.

A little more about the book:

After the death of Brian Boru in 1014, a legend arose of a healer so great she could raise a man from the dead, with a power so strong it could make any warrior the next high king of Éire…and to steal it away from her, he need only possess her.

Fated to be a healer…

Aednat has spent her entire life training to be the great healer, knowing she must remain alone. When she meets Diarmuid, the intense attraction she feels toward him shakes her resolve to believe in such a legend. If she gives in to the passion he ignites in her, can she settle for being less?

Destined to be his…

Diarmuid of Clonascra is renowned for his bravery in battle. Only one thing daunts him: the prospect of taking a wife. The safest course would be to keep his distance from Aednat, the bold, headstrong healer who’s far too tempting for his peace of mind. But his overking orders him to protect her from a group of craven warriors intent on kidnapping her to steal her power.

What starts as duty for Diarmuid quickly transforms into something more. Aednat’s power might be at risk, but so is his closed-off heart.

Ashley York, Daughter of the King, Flight of the Raven, giveaway, Judith Sterling, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Publisher's Weekly, The Derbfine Series, The Novels of Ravenwood

Welcome back to Medieval Monday! It’s Week Five of our “Family” theme, and I’m excited to feature an excerpt from Daughter of the King (Book 3 in the Derbfine Series) by the amazing Ashley York.

If you’re following my excerpt from Flight of the Raven, you can find the fifth snippet on Ashley’s blog: https://www.ashleyyorkauthor.com/blog

Now, let’s enjoy her fifth snippet:

“We’ll be wed.”

He tipped his head. “Is there a distinction?”

“I will not only be yers. Ye will be mine.”

She sensed his intake of breath rather than heard it. Darragh took her hand, gently leading her away from the others.

“And how d’ye treat what is yers?”

A note from Ashley: I loved writing about Brighit and Darragh. Follow along next week when I’ll be visiting Sherry Ewing’s blog: https://sherryewing.com/blog/

Remember to visit Ashley’s blog and comment on my snippet for a chance to win Flight of the Raven (or if you already have a copy, your choice of another of my books)!

A little more about Daughter of the King:

A mistaken identity. A gruesome murder. The uniting of two powerful clans.

Trained as a warrior…
Brighit of Clonascra is the only daughter of the fearsome overking, Sean, but despises the trappings and demands of womanhood. She’s far more comfortable training for battle than preparing a meal. Long held alliances require she set aside selfish dreams and take Darragh as her husband. The union intended to promote peace between the clans is interrupted by the shocking murder of a neighboring king and she quickly discovers there are far worse things than being wed.

Trained to be king…
Darragh of Drogheda has no wish to follow in the path of his father, Tadhg, but he is an obedient son and supports his father’s plans. His marriage to Brighit, however, will be no hardship at all since he finds her most intriguing especially when she fights him at every turn. A she-warrior indeed. Her persistent dismissal of him merely blows the fire aflame and sets him down the path to discovery of all her most tightly held secrets.

When she stands accused of the murder, can they finally come to an agreement that will give them each what they truly desire?

“Oh, Astrid.” He gripped his hands to keep from reaching for her. “Forgive my heartless words. Ye do not need to hear such things.” He was babbling like a damn fool and shook his head. “Please do not feel ye must stay here with me. I am fine, but I am not fit company.”

The auburn-haired lass returned. Closing the door behind her, she waited until Marcán’s eyes found her. Then, a fresh horn in her hand, she approached him with determined steps.

In ancient Ireland, men and women take to the legends for answers. Different-colored eyes are the mark of a Seer, it is said, and those who can see the future are in league with the devil. They cannot be suffered to live.

If Astrid ever showed him any interest, he would fight Beibhinn and any army to wed her.

She is desperate to escape…

Astrid is sick of her mother’s belittling, but her brother is in no hurry to see her married, so she decides to see to her own match-making. But let’s focus on Ashley’s fifth snippet from Curse of the Healer, Book One in The Derbfine Series:

He closed the remaining distance between them in three strides, his face etched in angry lines. She instinctively backed away, half expecting him to grab her arm.

“Ye’re a lousy mother… or nurse maid… or shepherdess… or whatever ye are, if ye think ’tis all well and good for a child to put himself in harm’s way as long as he lives to tell the tale.”

She recoiled at the insult. Although she was well past marrying age at two and twenty, she was no one’s mother and never would be.

Ashley York, guest author, Medieval Monday, medieval romance

Welcome back to Medieval Monday!  My guest today is Ashley York, who crafts stories “where history takes a passionate turn.”  Let’s see why she loves writing medieval.

Where History takes a passionate turn says it all! My medieval stories take place in the 11th and 12th century, the High Middle Ages. I love the fact that survival was not guaranteed and life was not easy. Babies died, food was fought over, and enemies were everywhere. This lends itself to creating complex characters that live life to the fullest, seeking satisfaction in all their pursuits whether it be in warfare or love, while knowing how brief there time may be. That equals passion! The fact that they live in a Christian society adds restraint to their decisions while they struggle with the many things, seen and unseen, and their pagan past hovers over them like a storm cloud.
This is an amazing time period where universities were just coming into prominence, empires were being established, and human ingenuity was on the upswing. I write my characters without an eye toward the outcome of history. Just because we know William of Normandy will conquer the Kingdoms of England in 1066 doesn’t mean we have to act like the Saxons were ripe for an invasion. Just the opposite! Let’s extol their strength and unity and their proud, though diverse, heritage. Let’s not give the ending away!

More about Ashley

Aside from two years spent in the wilds of the Colorado mountains, Ashley York is a proud life-long New Englander and a hardcore romantic. She has an MA in History which brings with it, through many years of research, a love for primary documents and the smell of musty old libraries. With her author’s imagination, she likes to write about people who could have lived alongside those well-known giants from the past.
