Welcome back to Medieval Monday, and welcome back, Ruth A. Casie!  You might remember, I featured The Pirate’s Jewel a few weeks ago on its release day.  Now we get a peek inside the pages!

If you’re following my excerpt from Shadow of the Swan, you can find the fifth snippet of Robert and Constance’s first encounter on Ruth’s blog.  Remember to leave a comment there for a chance to win a signed print copy of the book!  Here’s the link: https://www.RuthACasie.blogspot.com

Now, let’s enjoy Ruth’s fifth snippet:

Wesley made his way back to Richards and helped roll the last of the barrels up the gangplank.

Richards mopped his brow and looked at the sky.

“I’ll make sure there is no other cargo lingering on the dock while you lash down the barrels, then I’ll rouse the men in the tavern. From the looks of the sky and building wind, you’ll want to leave as soon as possible.” Wesley hurried down the gangplank.

The excerpt continues next week on Cathy MacRae’s blog: https://www.cathymacraeauthor.com/bits-n-bobs-author-blog

You can catch last week’s snippet on Lane McFarland’s blog: https://lanemcfarland.com/blog/

Commenters each week will be entered into a drawing for a free digital copy of Ruth’s work, The Maxwell Ghost.

A little more about The Pirate’s Jewel:

He had walked away from women before, but never with remorse, never with his heart broken.

Wesley Reynolds will do anything to avenge his family’s banishment from Dundhragon Castle even throw in with the notorious pirate, MacAlpin. His plan, ruin Lord Ewan’s trading network. He has a more devious plan for his father’s ‘best friend,’ the man who abandoned them at the eleventh hour. He’ll ruin the man’s most precious jewel, his daughter Darla. Wesley’s so close to ruining the trade network and succeeding he can almost taste it, but revenge is not nearly as sweet as Darla’s kisses.

Darla Maxwell, beloved by her parents has no prospects of marriage. Her father and Lord Ewan search to find her the right husband. Darla’s special gifts are frightening to many. She has visions that often come true. The murky image of a man haunts her, she’s sure it’s Lord Ewan’s soon-to-be son-in-law, but the vision morphs when she meets Wesley. The meaning couldn’t be any clearer to her, her destiny lies with Wesley.

When revelations surface indicating Wesley has been deceived and his revenge misplaced. Will he find the truth of what really happened to his family in time to stop the pirates? Will Darla ever forgive him? Will he ever forgive himself?

Welcome back to Medieval Monday!  I’m thrilled to have my friend Sherry Ewing here today.  We’re featuring her medieval romance, If My Heart Could See You.

If you’re following my excerpt from Shadow of the Swan, you can find the fourth snippet of Robert and Constance’s first encounter on Sherry’s blog.  Remember to leave a comment there for a chance to win a signed print copy of the book!  Here’s the link: https://www.sherryewing.com/blog

Now, let’s enjoy Sherry’s fourth snippet:

Once again, her hooded head gave no answer whilst she clutched the tartan closer to her, as if it offered the security she stood in need of.

“No? Well, I cannot in all good conscience leave you here to fend for yourself. A name then,” he encouraged, “tell me your name?”

“My n-name?”

Dristan heard her whispered words softly teasing his senses. “Aye, mistress, your name. Surely you have one?”

He stood fascinated as the head of the woman swiveled quickly in his direction. For one brief moment he beheld eyes of violet, reminding him of the heather on the Scottish moors. Still he waited patiently for her answer and yet she provided nothing to give her identity away.

Be sure to leave a comment to be in the running for Sherry’s giveaway – an eCopy of If My Heart Could See You.  A winner will be randomly selected and announced on Medieval Monday, May 6th.

A little more about If My Heart Could See You:

When you’re enemies, does love have a fighting chance?

For Amiria of Berwyck, defeat does not come easily as she watches her home and clan being ripped asunder. When the very enemy who has laid siege to her home demands her fealty, she will do whatever it takes to protect her people including a hastily concocted ruse that quickly begins to unravel. All too soon, she starts to question whether she can forgive herself for betraying those she has sworn to protect.

Dristan of Blackmore, champion knight of King Henry II, has a reputation to uphold as the Devil’s Dragon. After his invading army conquers Berwyck castle, he sets out to manage the newly claimed estate by training its knights in the art of proper defense. At first, everything appears as it should be, or is it? Betrayed by those he believed he could trust, he must first set aside his anger before he can make room in his heart for love.

Together they are tied by an unspoken bond. As they begin to rebuild the land and unite their people, forces beyond their control attempt to tear apart their fragile truce and only time will tell if love will forever bring them together.

bestselling author, Eliza Knight, Flight of the Raven, historical romance, interview, Judith Sterling, Kathryn LeVeque, Medieval Monday, Pirates of Britannia, Ruth A. Casie, The Guardian's Witch, The Novels of Ravenwood, The Pirate's Jewel, The Stelton Legacy, USA Today

I’m thrilled to have USA Today bestselling author Ruth A. Casie here! She’s part of our Medieval Mondays group, and today is release day for her latest book, The Pirate’s Jewel. Let’s see what she has to say about it.

What inspired you to write this book/series? Have you ever read a book with secondary characters that scream for a story of their own? Or better yet, characters you want to know more about?

Yes! That’s why my medieval romance, Flight of the Raven, turned into a series, The Novels of Ravenwood. Tell me more! Wesley Reynolds and Darla Maxwell, the central characters of my new release, The Pirate’s Jewel, are the parents of Lisbeth Reynolds, the heroine in my story, The Guardian’s Witch.
My story that is releasing today is one of the books in the Pirates of Britannia connected world created by Eliza Knight and Kathryn LeVeque. It is also a cross-over story to my series, The Stelton Legacy.

That is so cool! I have to know…have you encountered any of the characters in a dream? No. I haven’t encountered any of my characters in a dream, but I did get pulled over by a policeman for speeding because I was talking to one. I lost track of how fast I was going on the parkway. I was arguing with my character while I was driving to my meet up with my writing partners.

He just wouldn’t cooperate, my character not the police officer. I was having a terrible time with a plot point, and my hero sat in the passenger seat and didn’t say a word. I threw out idea after idea, but he said nothing. That was when I saw the flashing lights.

Yes, I told him everything and no, I did not get a ticket. The very nice police officer let me off with a warning. I would have liked to be a fly on the barracks wall when he came in.

I love it! If you could give your characters a word of advice, what would it be? In The Pirate’s Jewel, deception and family honor are a central theme that touches both Wesley and Darla in different ways. They learn that blind trust can have deadly consequences. My words of advice are listen, question, and evaluate.

Good advice! In general, which do you enjoy writing more: description or dialogue? That’s a great question. To outline my stories, I write what loosely resembles a synopsis. Here is where I can write straight dialogue without worrying about body language, emotional cues, or anything else. I just write the words. I find the dialogue comes naturally. When I edit, I need to wordsmith, and some of my best repartees will be deleted, but for me the dialogue fuels my writing.

I adore dialogue too! What do you love most about being an author? I love the creativity of storytelling. My sister is fifteen years older than me. When I told her I wrote a story and it was published by Harlequin, I didn’t know what she would say. Bernice was not surprised. She said I always had a story to tell or act out and quickly reminded me that I made her dress up as a cowgirl to play cowgirl (we didn’t have any bad guys) with me.

Yes, storytelling is truly magical! Thanks for joining me on your release day, Ruth. I wish you great success with The Pirate’s Jewel!

A bit more about the book:

Deception and family honor are at stake – so is her heart.

I’m excited to have the talented Elisabeth Hobbes here today, and we’re featuring her medieval romance, Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight.

If you’re following my excerpt from Shadow of the Swan, you can find the second snippet of Robert and Constance’s first encounter on Elisabeth’s blog.  Remember to leave a comment there for a chance to win a signed print copy of the book!  Here’s the link: https://elisabethhobbes.co.uk

Now, let’s enjoy Elisabeth’s second snippet:

At first Gui had mistaken her for a child: partly because of her manner, but mainly because she was so slightly built. Now she was closer he could make out the shape of small breasts beneath her shift and the blossoming curve of hips as she twisted and bent to unlace her shoes.

She was more woman than child.

Faced with this new evidence Gui gulped in surprise. He lowered himself further beneath the water, conscious of his own nakedness. Fortunately for Gui’s composure the girl did not do as he had done and shed every layer. She hitched up the skirt of her shift and waded purposefully into the water to her knees. Just as Gui had done she shivered in the cold. Beneath the water Gui grinned to himself in sympathy as another shudder racked his body.

You can catch up with Gui and the mysterious girl next week on Cathy MacRae’s blog: https://www.cathymacraeauthor.com/bits-n-bobs-author-blog

Elisabeth is offering one reader the chance to win an e-book copy of her brand new Scottish romance, A Runaway Bride for the Highlander which comes out in May. To be in with a chance, all you have to do is leave a comment on each of her snippets.

A little more about Beguiled by the Forbidden Knight:

He’s her enemy…

…and she must not fall for him!

When her mistress is claimed as an enemy knight’s betrothed, handmaiden Aelfhild knows it would be too dangerous for her lady; she must go in her place. But there’s more to the scarred knight than she first thought—she isn’t expecting to fall for him! As the line between friend and enemy blurs, Aelfhild realizes she might be protecting her mistress, but not her heart…

award-nominated, books on sale, Elisabeth Hobbes, excerpt, First Encounter, Judith Sterling, literary giveaway, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Shadow of the Swan, The Novels of Ravenwood

It’s time for a new round of Medieval Monday!  For this round, our theme is “First Encounter,” that moment when the hero and heroine first meet.  Every Monday for the next 13 weeks, I’ll feature a snippet from a medieval romance and tell you where to find the next bit of the story.

My excerpt (broken into 13 snippets) is from the award-nominated Shadow of the Swan, the third of The Novels of Ravenwood, so it’s the first encounter of Sir Robert le Donjon and Lady Constance.  If you comment on my snippets, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a signed print copy of the book.  Without further ado, here’s the beginning of my characters’ first encounter:

Not twelve steps away was a table covered in red cloth that hung an inch shy of the ground. Bolts of fabric sat on top, but the clothier was nowhere in sight. ’Twould make the perfect hiding place.

Avoiding the gaggle of geese, she dashed to the table and crouched on the ground beneath it. The red, woolen fabric created the thinnest of barriers, but she was grateful for it. With any luck, Dominy would pass right by and never notice.

Two male voices came within earshot and grew louder as the men paused in front of the table. One sounded younger, belonging to a body of six- or seventeen years; the other voice was seasoned, yet soothing.

The latter spoke. “You have need of new cloth?”

“Aye, sir.”

“I see. You wouldn’t be trying to impress a certain handmaiden, would you?”

The younger man sighed. “Alice. How did you guess?”

“I have eyes, Guy.”

“And a nose like a hound, if I may say so.”

The man addressed as “sir”—a knight, perchance?—chuckled and slid the tip of his boot beneath the red fabric.

Dust swirled and tickled her nostrils. She fought a sneeze, but it exploded three seconds later.

The laughter ceased. “Did you hear something?”

“Aye, sir. A sneeze. It came from under there.”

Remember to leave a comment for a chance to win a signed print copy of Shadow of the Swan, and follow along next week on Elisabeth Hobbes’s blog: https://elisabethhobbes.co.uk

A little more about the book:

Lady Constance de Bret was determined to be a nun, until shadows from the past eclipsed her present. Marriage is the safest option, but she insists on a spiritual union, in which physical intimacy is forbidden. Not so easy with a bridegroom who wields unparalleled charm! But a long-buried secret could taint his affection and cloak her in shadow forever.

Back from the Crusades, Sir Robert le Donjon craves a home of his own and children to inherit it. From the moment he meets Constance, he feels a mysterious bond between them. When she’s threatened, he vows to protect her and agrees to the spiritual marriage, with the hope of one day persuading her to enjoy a “real” one. She captivates him but opens old wounds and challenges everything he thought he believed.

Two souls in need of healing. Two hearts destined to beat as one.

Flight of the Raven, free eBook, Judith Sterling, literary giveaway, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, The Novels of Ravenwood

Welcome back to Medieval Monday! It’s the eighth and final week of our “Family” theme.  As promised, I have the last snippet of my excerpt from Flight of the Raven. Be sure to leave a comment for a chance to win the eBook, or if you already have it, your choice of another of my books. I’ll announce the winner next Monday, December 31. So without further ado…

“Lady Ravenwood wants what I cannot give.”

Robert raised an eyebrow. “And that is?”

“Love,” William said, as though naming a disease.

“She wants what is her due.”

“Because I slid a wedding band onto her finger?”

“No. Because of what she’s given you.”

His jaw tightened. “She won’t give me an heir. That much I know.”

“Well, you’d better listen to what I know. You’re happier at Ravenwood than you’ve been in years.”

Emma’s violet eyes and spirited smile raided William’s thoughts. “ʼTis fleeting, Robert. Mere moments of happiness.”

“A lifetime can be built from such moments…if you allow it.”

And there you have it!  Here’s a bit more about the book:

How eager would the bridegroom be if he knew he could never bed the bride?

Lady Emma of Ravenwood Keep is prepared to give Sir William l’Orage land, wealth, and her hand in marriage. But her virginity? Not unless he loves her. The curse that claimed her mother is clear: unless a Ravenwood heir is conceived in love, the mother will die in childbirth. Emma is determined to dodge the curse. Then William arrives, brandishing raw sensuality which dares her to explore her own.

William the Storm isn’t a man to be gainsaid. He’ll give her protection, loyalty, and as much tenderness as he can muster. But malignant memories quell the mere thought of love. To him, the curse is codswallop. He plans a seduction to breach Emma’s fears and raze her objections. What follows is a test of wills and an affirmation of the power of love.

Bram slanted her a look from the corner of his eyes.

“In exchange for the fun we will have, I will expect ye to mind yer table manners, try at least two bites of any new food I offer ye, and to speak when something momentous is on your mind.”

Bram slewed around in the chair, facing Caelen. “Da, if Bela marries ye, will she be my ma?”

“Aye,” Caelen replied, sending Arbela a look over the lad’s head. “It doesnae mean we have forgotten yer ma.”

A little more about the book:

Born in the Holy Land only a few years after the Third Crusade, half-Armenian, half-Scot Arbela MacLean is a true daughter of the desert, beautiful and untamed. Trained to be a warrior to avoid her gentle mother’s fate, Arbela has honed her skills with Turkish bow and arrow, sword and throwing darts—and dreads the day her father choses a man for her to marry.

After more than thirty years in the Holy Land, Donal MacLean, Baron of Batroun, is recalled to Scotland, the last son available to take up leadership of clan MacLean. He brings with him knights, treasure, trade—and a daughter of marriageable age.
Caelen MacKern, known as the Bull of the Highlands, is cynical about women. His first marriage formed an alliance, and he did not grieve when his spoiled, immature bride passed away. He has agreed to marry again—against his better judgement—for the men, means and coin to recover from a devastating pestilence that all but wiped out his clan.

Though more than a little resentful at finding himself forced to remarry, Caelen’s proposal to Donal MacLean’s headstrong daughter nevertheless piques her interest. Each will receive what they want most from life—the ability to live as they please without interference from a meddling spouse. But their marriage of indifference will soon change to one of passion that neither Arbela nor Caelen could have predicted.

Barbara Bettis, Flight of the Raven, free digital copy, giveaway, Judith Sterling, Knights of Destiny, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Silverhawk, The Novels of Ravenwood

Welcome back to Medieval Monday! It’s Week Six of our “Family” theme, and I’m honored to feature an excerpt from Silverhawk (Knights of Destiny) by the talented Barbara Bettis. It sounds like a wonderful read!

If you’re following my excerpt from Flight of the Raven, you can find the sixth snippet on Barbara’s blog: www.barbarabettis.blogspot.com  Be sure to visit and leave a comment for a chance to win a digital copy of Flight of the Raven or your choice of another of my books!

Now, let’s enjoy Barbara’s sixth snippet:

Garley paused at the door for a last jab, his tone flat. “Just remember, there’ll never be a place for you at Compton. Give the old man a son, and you’ll want for nothing. Fight him and you may find yourself back at the convent—if you’re lucky.”

His footsteps thudded down the corridor. Ortha slid in, muttering beneath her breath as she dampened a cloth from a water jar on the table to hold against Emelin’s face. Emelin felt her lower lip. It was swollen a bit. Perhaps no one would notice.

Please leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of Silverhawk. And follow along next week at Sherry Ewing’s blog: https://sherryewing.com/blog/

If you would like to read last week’s installment, check out Ruth A. Casie’s blog: https://www.RuthACasie.blogspot.com/

A little more about Silverhawk:

He’s everything a proper lady should never want; she’s everything a bastard mercenary can never have.

Sir Giles has come to England to kill his father, who seduced and betrayed his mother. First, however, he’ll seek sweet revenge—kidnap the old lord’s new betrothed. But when Giles uncovers a plot against King Richard, he faces a dilemma: take the lady or track the traitors. What’s a good mercenary to do? Both, of course.

Lady Emelin has had enough. Abandoned in a convent by her brother, she finally has a chance for home and family. Yet now she’s been abducted. Her kidnapper may be the image of her dream knight, but she won’t allow him to spoil this betrothal. Her only solution: escape

Rescuing the intrepid lady—while hunting traitors—is a challenge Giles couldn’t anticipate. But the greatest challenge to Giles and Emelin is the fire blazing between them.
