A Pride of Brothers: Aiden, A Pride of Brothers: Rick, award-nominated, contemporary romance, cover reveal, Peggy Jaeger, romance series, The Wild Rose Press

Behold the cover of Peggy Jaeger’s upcoming release, A Pride of Brothers: Aiden! It’s the second book in the series; the first, whose hero is Rick, is nominated for a RONE award. (Best of luck, Peg!)

Here’s the scoop on Aiden’s story:

Lexi Buckley wants answers about her younger sister’s death. The police have labeled it a suicide, but Lexi doesn’t believe it. Stymied in her investigation, she doesn’t know where to turn next. After a chance encounter with a private investigator, she thinks her prayers have been answered.

Aiden Keane has never been an answer to a prayer before, but he agrees to help Lexi. A quirky combo of brains and beauty, the pixie blonde makes him feel things no professional ever should for a client. When their investigation puts Lexi’s life in jeopardy, her safety becomes his number one priority. The hard part is not falling for her.

A peek between the pages:

Were you close with your sister?” Aiden asked.

Not the way we should have been. Not at the end.

“We had a sizable age difference between us. Almost ten years. I was the big sis. The oldest.” Her lips trembled when she pulled them into a sad line. Rolling her eyes she added, “The bossy one, according to her. She was the baby and took full advantage of her status from the moment she realized it.”

“And rightly so.” The corners of his eyes crinkled. “I’m the youngest of my brothers and I’ll can tell you with one hundred percent honesty, my oldest brother is the bossiest one of us. I think it comes with birth order. Although he takes his so called right uber-seriously. Especially at work.”

This time her grin was steadier.  “What kind of business do you all own together?”

“We a run a private security company.”

“Security?”

“Personal bodyguards, if a client needs protection from something. Background checks for employers. Mostly we do investigations.”

“What, like private eyes? Like on television?”

He laughed. “Nothing so glamorous. The fast cars and hot babes are all fantasy. It’s a lot of boring research, computer work, and surveillance, but yeah, you could say I’m a private eye.”

Lexi’s entire mood turned on his words. The sorrow flew, the hurt dissolved. Even her nervous trivia-speak went dormant. She sat bolt upright, her knees bumping against the tabletop when she shifted. Excitement shot from her system as she turned her body, placed a hand across his forearm and declared, “Oh, my God. You’re the answer to my prayers.”

Sounds like a great read, and the cover really sets the mood. No buy links yet, but you can find the first book in the series here.

Welcome back to Medieval Monday and the final week of our “First Encounter” theme.  Without further ado, here’s the last snippet of my excerpt from the award-nominated Shadow of the Swan, the third of The Novels of Ravenwood:

Constance’s gaze darted to and fro. “I can travel without my belongings, but I’ll need a mount.”

Robert nodded. “Guy and I passed the horse market earlier. Mostly pack mules and nervous colts, but I did spot a palfrey among them. Have you means to buy it?”

“Not with me, but—”

“Say no more. I’ll take care of it.”

She bit her lip. “Someone should also notify the Mother Prioress.”

“I’ll take care of that too.”

Her smile rewarded him. “Sir, you are generosity itself.”

Grinning, he puffed out his chest. “I am, aren’t I?” Helping her felt good. Great, in fact. He turned to his squire. “Buy your cloth, Guy, and stay close to her ladyship. I’ll return anon.”

He hastened to the nunnery and easily gained an audience with the prioress in the courtyard.

She accepted his tidings with a furrowed brow but more civility than he’d expected. “How long will she be away?”

He shrugged. “Her ladyship didn’t say, but I wouldn’t anticipate a long absence.”

“And you make for Ravenwood immediately?”

“Aye, Your Reverence.” A sudden movement caught his eye, and he looked left.

Close enough to eavesdrop, Archdeacon Dominy peered out from behind a stone pillar. He stared hard at the knight, then sank back into the shadows of the cloister.

A warning seized the pit of Robert’s stomach. The archdeacon was trouble. What hold had he over Lady Constance? Her fear was not unfounded. Of that, he was certain.

“Thank you for informing me of her plans,” the prioress said, oblivious to the snake in her garden. “God go with her.”

Robert clenched his fists. I don’t know about God. But I’ll be there.

And there you have it!  Leave a comment for a chance to win a signed print copy of Shadow of the Swan.  I’ll announce the winner next Monday, May 6th.

A little more about the book:

Lady Constance de Bret was determined to be a nun, until shadows from the past eclipsed her present. Marriage is the safest option, but she insists on a spiritual union, in which physical intimacy is forbidden. Not so easy with a bridegroom who wields unparalleled charm! But a long-buried secret could taint his affection and cloak her in shadow forever.

Back from the Crusades, Sir Robert le Donjon craves a home of his own and children to inherit it. From the moment he meets Constance, he feels a mysterious bond between them. When she’s threatened, he vows to protect her and agrees to the spiritual marriage, with the hope of one day persuading her to enjoy a “real” one. She captivates him but opens old wounds and challenges everything he thought he believed.

Two souls in need of healing. Two hearts destined to beat as one.

award-nominated, books on sale, Elisabeth Hobbes, excerpt, First Encounter, Judith Sterling, literary giveaway, Medieval Monday, medieval romance, Shadow of the Swan, The Novels of Ravenwood

It’s time for a new round of Medieval Monday!  For this round, our theme is “First Encounter,” that moment when the hero and heroine first meet.  Every Monday for the next 13 weeks, I’ll feature a snippet from a medieval romance and tell you where to find the next bit of the story.

My excerpt (broken into 13 snippets) is from the award-nominated Shadow of the Swan, the third of The Novels of Ravenwood, so it’s the first encounter of Sir Robert le Donjon and Lady Constance.  If you comment on my snippets, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a signed print copy of the book.  Without further ado, here’s the beginning of my characters’ first encounter:

Not twelve steps away was a table covered in red cloth that hung an inch shy of the ground. Bolts of fabric sat on top, but the clothier was nowhere in sight. ’Twould make the perfect hiding place.

Avoiding the gaggle of geese, she dashed to the table and crouched on the ground beneath it. The red, woolen fabric created the thinnest of barriers, but she was grateful for it. With any luck, Dominy would pass right by and never notice.

Two male voices came within earshot and grew louder as the men paused in front of the table. One sounded younger, belonging to a body of six- or seventeen years; the other voice was seasoned, yet soothing.

The latter spoke. “You have need of new cloth?”

“Aye, sir.”

“I see. You wouldn’t be trying to impress a certain handmaiden, would you?”

The younger man sighed. “Alice. How did you guess?”

“I have eyes, Guy.”

“And a nose like a hound, if I may say so.”

The man addressed as “sir”—a knight, perchance?—chuckled and slid the tip of his boot beneath the red fabric.

Dust swirled and tickled her nostrils. She fought a sneeze, but it exploded three seconds later.

The laughter ceased. “Did you hear something?”

“Aye, sir. A sneeze. It came from under there.”
